This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but inside Together exists a intense contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He fears the concept of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
