A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using these treatments should be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified regain.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a switch activating and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural changes.
